Hi everybody,
I have been producing sounds and music in my studio for more than 20 years. Starting out as a musician who studied audio engineering in order to get his own music translated onto a finished record, things have developed further, so I could help other artists creating unique pieces of music, too. I began recording and mixing records in 2001 and eventually became a mastering engineer around 2010.
Many recordings (mostly by independent artists and bands signed to smaller labels) have gone through my ears and fingers in various ways, always with lots of respect for and in collaboration with every artist I have worked with. I am proud of what we have achieved together so far.
Almost every artist has left the studio with a big smile on their face when the final touches were done. Some albums and songs still shine to this day, unfortunately only for those lucky enough to know the often quite special music at all.
What is the process of music production (and probably producing most art) all about? It is pretty straight forward, actually. Express your feelings and ideas, paint your own picture. Go out on a limb, fail again and again, until you have something exceptionally beautiful. Errors can be mysterious and extremely lovely creatures, but knowing what you're doing sometimes is a lot easier on the nerves.
I am looking forward to the next 20 years of sound. Maybe you will join me on the way.
The Equipment
I used to be a studio equipment junkie, but have lost a little bit of my former enthusiasm regarding this topic. You need good tools, but much more you need good ears, experience and imagination. I now simply prefer to use the gear I know, but always keep an eye on interesting new developments of course. Here are some of my tried and trusted studio tools I have been using for years now:
- Emes Black TV HR, Braun CM7 and Event ASP8 and ASP6 monitors, subwoofer
- Neumann V476B transistor and Universal Audio tube preamps
- Neumann, Microtech Gefell, Beyerdynamic and Brauner microphones
- SPL Charisma 8 tube processor, Filtek MK2 EQs
- Tascam 32 ¼” tape machine
- Metric Halo converters
- Apple Mac Pro 8-core computer
- UAD 2 Ultimate platform plugins and recording boxes
- Softube Console 1 Mixing System
- Steinberg Cubase Pro, Apple Logic Pro X, Wavelab Pro and DSP Quattro for Mastering
- Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate, Arturia, Softube and Waves software instruments and effects
See you,
Dirk
